Violet sat on the sofa, staring out the over-sized window of her loft. The city was alive beneath her and she could feel the vibrations down to the very center of her ribcage. The city was her heart. She breathed lights, fashion, loud roads and dirty sidewalks.  She closed her eyes and remembered her childhood. Sitting alone in her room imagining what it would be like to end up where she was now. Her father always telling her it would never be, and her mother constantly being doubtful. Violet had the motivation to accomplish what everyone said she wouldn't be able to. And here she was.

When she opened her eyes she realized she must have fallen asleep. Glancing at the clock and noticing the time, she exploded off the sofa and ran to the bathroom, scurrying to brush her hair and teeth, putting on as much makeup as she had time for, grabbing her coat and bag, and running out the door.
This was it.

She waved and a taxi driver stopped for her. She got in and slammed the door, spitting a destination through her teeth and holding on as the driver pulled back out onto the road. Her adrenaline was pumping and the wires in her mind were buzzing. This feeling was like a drug. Violet looked through the window and up into the sky, seeing the city lights all around her and feeling as if she was finally where she belonged. Here in New York.
This was it.

The driver finally pulled up to her destination and she payed him, then got out and walked inside. She immediately smelled expensive perfume and cigarette smoke. People were sipping vodka and glitter, talking and laughing as if this was the last night of their lives. This was how these people lived.  This was how Violet lived. She smiled as she saw the stage she would be standing on in less than an hour, and walked up to it, destined for backstage, to prepare for her show.
This was it.

As she stepped out into the bright lights and held the microphone tight in her hand, her ears rang with clapping and cheering. This was where she belonged. This is how Violet lived.

Everyone told her she wouldn't make it. The people closest to her said she couldn't. And they had to watch her rise to the top, despite the lies they fed her. And now they're regretting how much they hurt her.

This is it.
